Custom Kitchens

CUSTOM DESIGN OR MODULAR?

People generally don’t understand the difference between a modular kitchen and a custom-designed kitchen.

A modular kitchen is a series of “modules” (or boxes) that are capable of being installed in a room to create a kitchen. These modules are typically a “standard” size or a series of standard sizes. When fitted in the room it’s unlikely that the modules will fit exactly within the room without adjustment. Often the adjustment comes in the form of a filler (or panel) to make up the gap that remains at one end of a run of cabinets (between the last cabinet and a fixed wall for example). In order to completely fill the space you will even find companies that will fit different sized modules to compensate for the fact that the cabinets haven’t been made to measure (i.e. custom designed).

By contrast, a custom kitchen is designed to perfectly fit the room into which it is to be installed. Custom designed kitchens don’t use modular cabinets because no kitchen is a “standard” size or configuration. In a custom designed kitchen, the designer will ensure that each cabinet is the same width as the cabinet it adjoins. The importance of this is that the finished kitchen will be much more aesthetically pleasing, as each cabinet will be a uniform size.

Are Modular Kitchens Cheaper than Custom Designed Kitchens?

If you have the luxury of space, your kitchen can be the ideal place to entertain your family and friends. Gone are the days when the kitchen was the domain of the person doing the cooking while guests squeezed into doorways or adjacent rooms, isolating themselves and the long-suffering cook! Modern kitchens typically feature stacks of bench-space and island benches, with many incorporating casual seating, making the kitchen a much more sociable and inclusive space than it was in days past.

Are There Other Hidden Costs?

Be aware that some kitchen companies will charge you a fee for your initial consultation. An initial consultation fee of $700 to $800 is not uncommon, and coupled with the cost of installation, can really blow your budget if you haven’t considered it.

While it seems obvious, retailers and advertisers of modular kitchens generally focus on the cost of the cabinetry. If you require a stone bench-top, you should be aware that this will be in addition to the cost of the cabinetry. Again, the cost of the bench- top will vary depending on the size of the job and the quality of the stone you select. However you could expect to spend in excess of $2,000 for even a kitchen of modest proportions.

A Tradesman or a Salesman?

Because our cabinetry is custom-made you will be dealing with a qualified tradesman/kitchen designer. He understands what is required to deliver a kitchen that is properly designed to fit the space in your home. Each element (eg. doors, drawers, etc) will be designed to operate correctly. We think a tradesman is better qualified to help with your kitchen design than someone who may be trained as a salesman, but who lacks training in the cabinet making trade.
