Large Kitchen Advice

Blessed for Space

Many home owners feel constrained by limited space. This can be very frustrating if you feel you need to compromise on what you’d really like in your kitchen design. If you’re fortunate enough to have a large space for your kitchen, there are no such constraints. You should be able to include all the design features you’ve dreamed of. If you are doing a kitchen renovation, re-modelling, etc. Here are tips on large kitchens’ designs and other important advice.

Island Bench

Number one on the wish list for many kitchen renovators is an island bench. Unfortunately, space constraints often make inclusion of this timeless feature impossible. Owners of large kitchens can easily accommodate a generous island bench with convenient bench space, storage and an area for casual seating included. If you have services (electricity, water, gas) available to the site where you intend locating your island bench, you may wish to include your sink or cooktop.

It’s always a good idea to include a power point in an island bench too. And it’s much easier (and inexpensive) to do so in the early stages rather than as an afterthought. If your budget allows, an under-bench wine fridge and beverage centre are not only luxury features but also very practical inclusions.

A Big Pantry

If an island bench is number one on the wish-list, a walk-in pantry or a butler’s pantry would run a close second. The benefits of these features are obvious and many would love to include one during a kitchen renovation. A walk-in pantry generates huge amounts of storage for all the packaged foodstuffs you need, while a butler’s pantry takes things to an entirely new level altogether.

In a butler’s pantry you gain all the benefits of the walk-in pantry, plus the bonus of a sink and electricity. This allows you to undertake much of your cleaning-up and meal preparation in an area outside the confines of the main kitchen area. Clients with butler’s pantries invariably love them, as most of the necessary mess associated with kitchens is concealed behind closed doors. If you proceed with a walk-in pantry, we suggest you include a light that operates automatically when the door is opened.

Which Kitchen Design is the Best?

Having a larger space to work with affords you the opportunity to be very flexible with kitchen design, as all of the common designs can be comfortably accommodated.

Perhaps the best design (if you’d like to maximise bench and storage space) is the U-shaped kitchen. This is a popular design that can be difficult to squeeze into smaller spaces, especially if you also require an island bench. The U-shape is a design always appreciated by home chefs, as it’s a really convenient place to undertake food preparation. It has plenty of room to move about, and stacks of bench-space.

Large Capacity Appliances

Budget restrictions always need to be considered especially during kitchen renovations. However, large kitchens are ideal for full-size or even oversized appliances, while increasing the scope for the home-chef.

Modern 900mm ovens and cooktops, double-door fridges, double-bowl sinks, and full sized dishwashers are all inclusions that will not look out of place in a large kitchen.

Side-by-side integrated fridges and freezers not only provided impressive amounts of storage, they also blend in with your cabinetry choices for a sleek, streamlined look.

Big and Bold

Large spaces increase your scope for bolder choices, whether that is colours, lighting or accessories. In smaller kitchens the choice of bold colours and accessories can make the space look too cluttered. Your personal sense of style and colour can be fully explored in a larger space.

If you’ve decided to include an island bench, don’t be too conservative with its size, provided it remains in proportion with the rest of your kitchen. For a touch of pizzazz, a strip of LED lights under the bench is an inexpensive feature that is an attention-grabber, as it looks sensational.
