New Kitchen Trends

What Are My Choices?

Before deciding on whether to incorporate the latest kitchen trends in your kitchen renovation. consider if you’re doing so simply because it’s “trendy” or if you really like the current design trends. If you’re just going along with a trend you’ll probably regret the decision in the long run and you won’t get good value from your renovation. Choose only the trends you love and that suit your personal taste and style.

What’s “On Trend” Now?

Open Plan

Recent building trends strongly favour an open concept in all living areas of new homes, including kitchens, and this trend is set to continue. Modern kitchens typically integrate with dining areas, living areas, and even outdoor entertainment areas, maximising the functionality and visual appeal of these zones. Be aware that if you elect for an open plan, your kitchen becomes a highly visible focal point with all the mess and clutter in full view. This leads to the next “trend”.

Storage

While the concept of storage may seem a mundane consideration, kitchen designs have come a long way in addressing the aesthetic problems of open plan designs (i.e. clutter). Ten years ago most kitchens featured more cupboards than drawers. These days that trend has reversed as drawers are a much more efficient way of storing everything that belongs in your kitchen. Pantry drawers make it easy to access all of the ingredients that used to be lost forever in the back of the pantry cupboard.

Benchtops

Round, bull-nosed benchtops are rarely chosen since the trend to more modern, seamless designs has emerged. Replacing the old style benchtops are natural stone slabs that are stain resistant, durable, and easy to clean. Combined with waterfall ends there’s no doubt the finished look is very pleasing and practical. Incorporating under-bench storage and creating space to accommodate bar stools for casual dining are obvious opportunities.

Handless-less

Most of our kitchen renovation clients imagine a sharp, streamlined design. Embracing the challenge to achieve this look, modern kitchen cabinetry is often designed without handles. Handle-less kitchens with touch catches and soft-closing doors and drawers are luxury features that can easily be incorporated into nearly all kitchen renovations. Of course, there’s also a vast range of handles available, with recent trends being towards slimmer, streamlined designs rather than the chunky styles that were favoured years ago.

Shelving

Open shelving is an emerging trend and provides an opportunity to display beautiful crockery and glassware, bringing colour and visual interest into the space.

Glass Doors

Clear or frosted glass doors, with or without feature back-lighting have emerged as a pleasing and practical feature in all styles of kitchens, from traditional to contemporary. Hide what’s behind them, or feature it … the choice is yours.

Undermount Sinks

Again the emphasis here is “streamlining” the look. With stone benchtops running above the sink and up to its edge the sink “disappears” into the benchtop. Combine this with beautiful kitchen tapware and the effect can be stunning. Stone benchtops are very competitively priced and now come in a plethora of colours, some closely imitating the look of marble, but at a fraction of the price.

Colours

Neutral colours are still on-trend, with white, cream, and grey being the most popular. Crisp white will always be popular and timeless, while modern greys are now warmer and muted. Colour blocks can be introduced to reflect your personality, usually with glass or tiled splashbacks or coloured door and drawer fronts. Read more about colour.

Texture

Textured laminate timber-grains are immensely popular with designers and home renovators, with a sensational range of styles and colours now available. These products are primarily used on the fronts of cabinets and drawers. Textured finishes create a beautiful tactile quality to the kitchen with a very pleasing look and feel. They’re warm and homely. If that’s your style you should consider these finishes in your renovation.
